UN Chief Rings Alarm on Erosion of Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty's Power

The United Nations Secretary-General has issued a stark warning about the diminishing authority of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), raising concerns that the decades-old accord may be losing its ability to prevent a nuclear catastrophe.

In a recent statement, the UN chief highlighted growing challenges to the treaty's framework, including modernization of nuclear arsenals, rising geopolitical tensions, and the development of new delivery systems. He emphasized that the NPT, which entered into force in 1970 and aims to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons, is facing unprecedented strain.

The warning comes ahead of the treaty's review conference, where signatories are expected to debate measures to strengthen its provisions. Analysts note that non-proliferation efforts have been complicated by the failure of nuclear-armed states to fully comply with disarmament commitments and the reluctance of some nations to join the agreement.

"The treaty's credibility is at stake," the UN chief said, urging member states to recommit to its principles. "Without urgent action, we risk a return to an era of unchecked nuclear proliferation."

Despite these challenges, the NPT remains the cornerstone of global nuclear governance, with 191 states parties. However, its effectiveness is increasingly questioned as emerging technologies and asymmetric threats test its limits.
