The University of Utah has achieved a groundbreaking milestone by using its TRIGA nuclear reactor to generate electricity for an AI data center. This marks the first time a nuclear reactor has directly powered artificial intelligence workloads.
The innovative project converts heat from the reactor into electrical energy, which is then used to run GPUs for AI computing. The collaboration involves Elemental Nuclear and multiple universities, highlighting the potential of nuclear technology to meet growing energy demands.
"This experiment demonstrates the immense potential of nuclear power in supporting future energy needs, especially for energy-intensive AI applications," said a spokesperson. The reactor's output, though modest, proves the viability of coupling nuclear energy with AI infrastructure.
