In a statement released on Friday, the embassy advised U.S. nationals to avoid crowded public spaces such as schools, churches, and tourist attractions, and to vary their travel routes to minimize risk. The warning underscores growing concerns about potential extremist violence in the country.
"The threat level increase means a terrorist attack is highly likely," the embassy said. "U.S. citizens should maintain a low profile, be aware of their surroundings, and follow the instructions of local authorities."
The British government raised the threat level from 'substantial' to 'severe' earlier this week, citing intelligence suggesting an increased possibility of attacks by individuals or groups inspired by extremist ideologies. The move comes amid heightened security measures across the UK, with police stepping up patrols in major cities.
American citizens are encouraged to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive real-time alerts and to contact the embassy for assistance if needed. The embassy also recommends reviewing personal security plans and avoiding non-essential travel to areas identified as high-risk.
