US Embassy Warns US Citizens About May Day Protests in Philippines

The United States Embassy in Manila has issued a security alert advising American citizens of planned protests on Labor Day, May 1. The embassy urged U.S. nationals to avoid areas where demonstrations are expected and to exercise caution.

The alert, posted on the embassy's website, noted that protests may occur near major government buildings, universities, and public plazas in Metro Manila and other urban centers. While the advisory did not specify the groups organizing the protests, Labor Day demonstrations historically involve labor unions and leftist groups advocating for workers' rights and higher wages.

The embassy recommended that U.S. citizens monitor local news, plan alternative routes, and keep a low profile. It also reminded Americans to carry valid identification at all times and to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) for emergency updates.

No specific threats were mentioned, but the embassy emphasized that even peaceful protests can turn confrontational. The Philippine National Police has announced it will deploy additional personnel to ensure order during the holiday.
