The US government has reached a $1.2 billion deal with German energy company RWE to abandon its offshore wind projects. The company will instead invest the payout into conventional gas projects, including a liquefied natural gas export terminal in Louisiana. According to RWE, the decision was made after determining there was no feasible path forward to permit the offshore wind projects in the US for the foreseeable future. As part of the agreement, RWE will relinquish its leases off the coasts of California and Louisiana, as well as in the New York Bight. The German firm plans to invest approximately $19.6 billion in the US over the next six years to grow its generation capacity, with a focus on fossil fuels. This deal is the latest move by the Trump administration to halt offshore wind projects and boost support for the fossil fuel industry. The administration has reached similar deals with other companies, including TotalEnergies and Duke Energy, to terminate their offshore wind leases in exchange for investments in fossil fuel projects. The shift in focus from renewable energy to fossil fuels has sparked controversy, with critics arguing that it undermines efforts to address climate change and promote sustainable energy solutions.
