The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) now offers a range of fertility and adoption benefits for eligible veterans, including in vitro fertilization (IVF) for those with service-connected reproductive injuries, adoption reimbursement up to $2,000 per child, and expanded access for survivors of military sexual trauma (MST).

IVF and Assisted Reproduction Veterans who have a service-connected condition that causes infertility—such as a spinal cord injury, pelvic injury, or certain reproductive system injuries—may qualify for IVF coverage. The VA covers the full cost of IVF treatment, including medication, egg retrieval, and embryo transfer. Same-sex couples and unmarried veterans are also eligible under the policy.

Adoption Reimbursement The VA provides up to $2,000 per child for qualifying adoption expenses. This benefit covers fees for adoption agencies, legal costs, and travel related to the adoption process. To be eligible, veterans must have a service-connected disability rating of 50% or higher. The reimbursement can be used for both domestic and international adoptions.

MST Survivors and Reproductive Health In a 2024 expansion, the VA removed barriers for survivors of MST who experience infertility. These veterans no longer need to prove a direct service connection for reproductive injury to access fertility treatments. The policy change aims to address the long-term health consequences of MST.

How to Apply Veterans can apply for these benefits through their local VA medical center or by contacting the VA's Reproductive Health Services office. The application process requires documentation of the service-connected condition or MST report, as well as proof of infertility or adoption expenses.
