Van Dijk's Brutal Admission: Liverpool 'Gave Up' in FA Cup Demolition by Manchester City

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has issued a stark apology to supporters, admitting his team "gave up" during their humiliating 4-0 FA Cup quarter-final defeat to Manchester City on Saturday.

The Reds' hopes for domestic silverware this season were extinguished at Etihad Stadium in a devastating 18-minute period spanning halftime. After an initially competitive opening half-hour, City unleashed a ruthless display, scoring twice before the break and adding two more shortly after.

"I can only apologise to the fans for what we have shown, especially the second half," said the 34-year-old Dutch defender. "To come back from 3-0 is obviously very difficult here - but also you shouldn't give up and that's maybe, at a certain point, what happened."

Van Dijk, whose foul led to Erling Haaland's opening penalty in the 39th minute, didn't mince words about the collective failure. "We let our fans down, we let ourselves down, and the manager. The way we played in the second half, especially, must hurt for everyone. It definitely hurts me."

Haaland completed a hat-trick by the 57th minute, with Antoine Semenyo adding City's third goal in between. The comprehensive defeat leaves Liverpool's season resting entirely on Champions League success, with a crucial quarter-final first leg against Paris Saint-Germain looming on Wednesday.

"It's a together thing, isn't it?" Van Dijk said regarding manager Arne Slot's position. "Obviously he's responsible as the manager but we are the ones on the pitch that have to do it. Everyone has to look at themselves."

The captain acknowledged the immediate challenge ahead: "PSG are waiting for us. I watched them Friday a little bit. It will be so tough again. So we have to be ready mentally as soon as possible."

Liverpool, currently fifth in the Premier League, face a critical period with European and domestic fixtures compressed into a demanding schedule. The FA Cup exit represents a significant blow to a club that last won the competition in 2022 and now faces mounting pressure to salvage their season through continental success.
