Victor Wembanyama Signs Record $252 Million Extension with Spurs

Victor Wembanyama, the NBA's tallest player at 7'4", has signed a five-year, $252 million rookie-scale extension with the San Antonio Spurs, according to ESPN. The deal, worth $50.4 million annually, includes a player option for the fifth season and ranks as the third-largest rookie extension in NBA history.

Hours after telling Spurs fans he was "here to stay" on social media, the French center put pen to paper. The Spurs confirmed the signing with photos and videos but did not disclose financial terms. Wembanyama tweeted, "Spurs family, I'm here to stay. Whatever it takes."

Selected first overall in the 2023 NBA Draft, Wembanyama has quickly established himself as one of the league's elite young talents. Through three seasons, he has averaged 23.4 points, 11 rebounds, 3.5 assists, and 3.5 blocks per game. This season, he earned Defensive Player of the Year honors and a first-team All-NBA selection, finishing third in MVP voting after career highs of 25.0 points and 11.5 rebounds per game.

A career 34.2% shooter from beyond the arc, Wembanyama has led the league in blocks every season since his debut. He recently led the Spurs to their first NBA Finals appearance in his tenure, where they fell to the New York Knicks in five games.

The Spurs are building around Wembanyama with a young core including guards De'Aaron Fox, Stephon Castle, Devin Vassell, and Dylan Harper, along with veteran forward Tobias Harris, who signed this offseason.
