Wales Drawn Against Albania in First Round of Women's World Cup Play-offs

Wales will need to overcome Albania, and then either Romania or Norway, in a two-legged play-off series to secure a spot at the 2027 FIFA Women's World Cup.

The draw, made on Friday, pits Rhian Wilkinson's side against Albania in the first round. Wales previously faced Albania in League B Group 1 qualifying, winning 4-0 in Wrexham and 1-0 away. Wales topped their group ahead of the Czech Republic.

The first leg will be away for Wales, with the return leg at home. If they advance, Wales will meet the winner of the match between Romania and Norway in the second round. Norway, currently ranked 14th in the world, are managed by former Wales boss Gemma Grainger. Wales would be away in the second leg of that tie.

Analysis

Wales are likely to face a top-20 side for the first time in a competitive match if they are to reach their first World Cup. Assuming they get past Albania, Norway are the probable opponents, unless Romania can cause a major upset, given the 39-place gap in the world rankings between the two nations. Wales lost home and away to Norway in the Euro 2022 qualifying campaign. It's a significant challenge, but not impossible, and head coach Wilkinson will be determined to lead Wales to their second major tournament.
