Wales' Political Map Redrawn: A Guide to the 16 New Senedd Constituencies

Wales is undergoing a significant electoral transformation ahead of the Senedd election on 7 May, with voters set to encounter a completely new political map. The traditional constituencies have been replaced by 16 newly defined electoral areas, each bearing exclusively Welsh-language names.

Under the reformed system, voters aged 16 and over will cast a single ballot for a political party within their constituency. From these votes, six Members of the Senedd (MSs) will be elected to represent each area, marking a shift in how political representation is allocated across the nation.

The newly established constituencies are:

  • Afan Ogwr Rhondda
  • Bangor Conwy Môn
  • Blaenau Gwent Caerffili Rhymni
  • Brycheiniog Tawe Nedd
  • Caerdydd Ffynnon Taf
  • Caerdydd Penarth
  • Casnewydd Islwyn
  • Ceredigion Penfro
  • Clwyd
  • Fflint Wrecsam
  • Gwynedd Maldwyn
  • Gŵyr Abertawe
  • Pen-y-bont Bro Morgannwg
  • Pontypridd Cynon Merthyr
  • Sir Fynwy Torfaen
  • Sir Gaerfyrddin

These changes aim to reshape the electoral landscape, with each constituency expected to face distinct local issues and priorities that will influence the upcoming campaign. Voters are encouraged to explore the specific candidate lists for their area to understand the choices available in this reconfigured political environment.
