Welsh First Minister Eluned Morgan made an embarrassing slip-up at a campaign event on Thursday, accidentally telling Labour supporters to "vote Plaid Cymru" instead of her own party.
Speaking at a rally in Barry Island, Vale of Glamorgan, Morgan urged the crowd to "vote Welsh Labour in the election next week" before switching to Welsh and saying "pleidleisiwch Plaid Cymru" (vote Plaid Cymru). She quickly corrected herself, saying "Plaid Llafur" (Labour Party).
The gaffe occurred as Morgan was launching a document detailing the costs of some of her party's policies ahead of the Senedd election on 7 May. The crowd laughed at the mistake but applauded and cheered at the end of her speech.
After the event, Morgan told ITV Wales: "We're all a little bit exhausted; once you switch into Welsh the word 'Cymru' comes off your lips. Obviously I'm very, very keen for people to vote Welsh Labour in this election."
Speaking to the BBC later, she dismissed suggestions that the campaign was going against her, saying: "Now is not the time to take a risk when people's bills are going up, when people are really up against it. To put people with no experience of running anything in charge, I think that is a huge risk at a time when what people need is stability."
Labour has held power in Wales for 27 years, but recent opinion polls show the party trailing Plaid Cymru and Reform UK in the Senedd election race.
