Welsh Reform Leader Denies Racism Charges in Fiery Election Debate

The leader of Reform in Wales has insisted his party is not racist, during a heated televised debate ahead of the Senedd election where party leaders clashed over immigration policy.

Dan Thomas made the remarks while attacking the Welsh government's 'Nation of Sanctuary' policy, which helps refugees and asylum seekers integrate. The debate, broadcast on BBC Wales, saw four left-wing party leaders rule out working with Reform to form a future government, though they left the door open for coalitions among themselves.

Thomas challenged all major parties to publish the full costings of their election promises before the 7 May vote. The policy dispute centered on immigration, an area not devolved to Wales, but one where the government has launched pro-refugee initiatives.

"Listening to the majority of the people in Wales isn't a dangerous game. It's called democracy," Thomas said, rejecting accusations that Reform stokes division. He pointed to his own past praise for Barnet Council's sanctuary record as evidence the party is not racist.

Wales Green leader Anthony Slaughter accused Reform and the Conservatives of blaming immigrants for decaying public services, calling it a "dangerous game." Plaid Cymru leader Rhun ap Iorwerth criticized Thomas for "playing the victim" over charges of racism.

With no party expected to win a majority in the expanded 96-seat Senedd, coalition-building will be crucial. Labour, Plaid Cymru, the Liberal Democrats, and the Greens all said they would not work with Reform. The Conservatives' leader, Andrew RT Davies, refused to rule out cooperation with any party if it helps deliver Tory policies.

The Institute for Fiscal Studies warns the next Welsh government will face severe financial pressures, meaning many manifesto pledges may require tax hikes or spending cuts.
