Welsh Youth Voice Demands for 2026 Senedd Election: Climate Action, Housing, and Education Reform Top Priorities

As Wales looks toward the 2026 Senedd election, young people across the nation are articulating clear demands for political change, with climate action, affordable housing, and education reform emerging as their top priorities.

A recent survey of Welsh youth aged 16-25 reveals a generation deeply engaged with political issues but often feeling overlooked by current policymakers. Many respondents expressed frustration with what they perceive as slow progress on environmental commitments, calling for more ambitious green policies and sustainable infrastructure investments.

"We're the ones who will inherit the consequences of today's decisions," said 19-year-old university student Elin Jones from Cardiff. "Politicians need to stop treating climate change as a future problem and start acting with the urgency it demands."

Housing affordability emerged as another critical concern, with young adults reporting difficulties entering the property market and facing rising rental costs. Many advocated for increased social housing construction and stronger tenant protections.

Education reform also featured prominently in youth discussions, with calls for curriculum updates to better prepare students for modern job markets and increased mental health support in schools.

Political engagement among Welsh youth appears to be growing, with voter registration initiatives reporting increased interest from first-time voters. However, many young people emphasized that their participation depends on seeing concrete policy proposals addressing their concerns.

"We're not just asking for token gestures," explained 22-year-old community organizer Rhys Williams from Swansea. "We want substantive policy changes that will actually improve our lives and future prospects."

As political parties begin formulating their platforms for the 2026 election, youth advocates are organizing to ensure their voices are heard throughout the campaign process, planning voter education events and candidate forums focused on issues important to younger generations.
