West Devon Council Launches £300,000 Fund to Ease Financial Hardship

West Devon Borough Council has announced funding of £300,682 to support residents facing financial difficulties. The Crisis and Resilience Fund, which replaces the Household Support Fund as of April, aims to provide both emergency relief and long-term stability.

The council will establish a dedicated Financial Advice and Support Team in partnership with South Hams District Council to help residents access assistance. Support includes crisis payments for low-income households, with priority given to Devon care leavers.

Among the provisions are aid for everyday essentials and items such as electric blankets, warm clothing, and slow cookers, which will be available later this year. The funding is designed to help individuals build financial resilience, confidence, and independence.

Councillor Jane Elliott, the council's hub lead for community wellbeing, stated: "We know that for many people, it does not take much for things to become difficult."

The council also plans to explore community energy schemes and collaborate with organizations offering free energy advice. Additionally, £20,000 has been allocated to West Devon CVS to coordinate local support, and £20,590 to Homemaker Southwest for welfare benefits and debt advice.

Elliott added: "This funding means we can offer help when it is needed most, whether that is emergency support, help with essential items or access to affordable options like the heating oil loan scheme."

Residents can find details about the fund and how to apply on the council's website.
