Wigan Warriors Survive Wakefield Scare in Challenge Cup Quarter-Final Thriller

In a pulsating Betfred Challenge Cup quarter-final at Belle Vue, Wigan Warriors narrowly defeated Wakefield Trinity 26-22 to secure a spot in the semi-finals, where they will face arch-rivals St Helens.

Wakefield started explosively, building a 12-point lead within the first 15 minutes. Jake Trueman opened the scoring after a slick line break from Mike McMeeken, followed by Ky Rodwell's determined finish just minutes later.

Wigan, however, clawed their way back into the contest. Patrick Mago powered through to get the visitors on the board, and Liam Marshall's trademark cut inside leveled the scores. Wakefield responded with a spectacular team move finished by Tom Johnstone's one-handed dive in the corner, but the momentum shifted when Jazz Tevaga was sin-binned for a petulant kick-out.

Capitalizing on their numerical advantage, Wigan scored right before halftime as Jai Field collected Harry Smith's kick under the posts. Adam Keighran's conversion gave the Warriors an 18-16 lead at the break.

The second half continued at a frenetic pace. Zach Eckersley extended Wigan's lead with a try on the right wing, but Wakefield refused to surrender. Cam Scott exploited a gap in Wigan's defense to touch down, with Max Jowitt's conversion bringing Trinity level and marking his 1,000th career point for the club.

After a scuffle near halfway, Eckersley sealed the victory with his second try of the half, set up by Keighran. Despite Wakefield's valiant effort, Wigan held on for a hard-fought win, ending their two-match losing streak and setting up a highly anticipated semi-final clash with St Helens.

In the other semi-final, Hull KR will face Warrington Wolves in a repeat of last year's Wembley final.
