Wilkinson Commits to Wales: 'Unfinished Business' Drives Contract Extension

Rhian Wilkinson has extended her tenure as Wales women's head coach, citing a deep sense of unfinished business. The former Canada defender, who took over in February 2024, insists her ambitions extend beyond simply qualifying for the 2027 Women's World Cup or the 2029 European Championship. Her goal is to build a lasting foundation that ensures Wales consistently contend for major tournaments.

Wilkinson's contract extension was announced after careful family deliberation, and she acknowledged the role has been "much harder but also much better" than anticipated. "I don't think this project is finished," she said. "I feel I can help raise the level another notch before the next coach comes in. The job is to continually drive the team forward, and I'm not finished with that."

Wales continue their World Cup qualifying campaign on Friday against Montenegro in Podgorica, followed by a home match against the Czech Republic in Cardiff. Under Wilkinson, the team secured their first-ever major tournament appearance at Euro 2025, and now they aim for a World Cup debut. While former captain Kath Morgan suggested Wilkinson's tenure "would be judged on qualification," Wilkinson sees a broader mission, emphasizing squad depth and long-term growth.
