World Cup to Red-Card Players Covering Mouths During Altercations

In a groundbreaking move, the International Football Association Board (Ifab) has approved two law amendments that will take effect at the upcoming World Cup. Players caught covering their mouths while speaking to opponents during confrontations could now be shown a red card. The decision, made at a special Ifab meeting in Vancouver, Canada, aims to combat hidden verbal abuse, including racist or homophobic remarks.

The issue gained prominence in February when Benfica's Gianluca Prestianni covered his mouth while speaking to Real Madrid's Vinicius Jr during a Champions League match. Prestianni was later banned for six matches (three suspended) for homophobic conduct. FIFA President Gianni Infantino supported the crackdown, stating, "If you do not have something to hide, you don't hide your mouth when you say something."

Additionally, players who leave the pitch in protest at a referee's decision may also face a red card, following chaotic scenes at the Africa Cup of Nations final between Morocco and Senegal. Both amendments are optional for competitions but have been confirmed for use at this summer's World Cup. Referees will retain full discretion to assess each situation before issuing a red card.
