Wrexham's Windass Calls for Play-Offs Rerun After Southampton Spygate Sanction

Wrexham striker Josh Windass has demanded the Championship play-offs be restarted following Southampton's expulsion for spying on rival teams.

Southampton were kicked out of the play-offs and hit with a four-point deduction for next season after admitting they spied on three league opponents. The club has appealed, calling the punishment disproportionate.

Wrexham missed the play-offs by two points on the final day after drawing with Middlesbrough. Windass questioned why the competition isn't being replayed with Wrexham taking Southampton's place.

"This story is one of the maddest I've seen. But why isn't the play-offs starting again with the four other teams?" he posted on social media. "Boro v Hull would have been the semi! Confused."

Wrexham finished nine points behind Southampton in the regular season. The EFL's disciplinary commission did not consider replacing Southampton as a potential outcome, but Wrexham is monitoring the situation and awaiting the full written reasons before deciding on next steps.

One option is legal action for compensation if Southampton gained an unfair advantage that affected Wrexham's play-off hopes. No discussions have been held yet, but the club is keeping its options open.

"We look forward to receiving the full details of the decision in due course," a club spokesperson said.

Wrexham owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney have mocked Southampton on social media.

Former Hull defender Curtis Davies also questioned the verdict's implications: "Whether it's the right decision or not is down to opinion. But after today's appeal I wonder where Wrexham and even Millwall might stand."

Windass added: "Wrexham finished seventh and could argue they'd have been in the play-offs. Millwall finished third but lost their play-off to Hull, Boro also lost but have gone through."
