Birmingham, a founding member of the WSL, is driven by redemption after narrowly missing promotion on the final day last season. Manager Amy Merricks expressed both ambition and resolve.
"We have to earn the right," Merricks stated. "I truly believe in this group, the quality and the ability that we have, and that's why I'm excited. We're fighting for something and that's where we want to be."
The club has seen significant investment, including minority ownership from NFL legend Tom Brady and a recent purchase by US-based Shelby Companies Limited. They've broken their transfer record and upgraded facilities, with Merricks declaring the team "WSL ready."
In stark contrast, Charlton Athletic has operated on one of the league's smallest budgets, relying on a formidable defense that has conceded the fewest goals. Despite a recent dip in form, manager Karen Hills remains proud of her team's position.
"It's just an incredible league," Hills said. "If we were to be promoted then I believe it's probably one of the greatest achievements in my career."
The season's final day features a potentially decisive showdown as Birmingham travels to face Charlton.
Crystal Palace, recently relegated from the WSL, has found resurgence under new manager Jo Potter, winning five of their last six matches to hold third place. Their favorable remaining schedule against lower-table opponents gives them a strong chance to climb higher.
Newcastle United, though facing a five-point deficit, hasn't given up hope. Manager Tanya Oxtoby emphasized the club's long-term vision.
"Everything that we're doing is to be WSL ready," Oxtoby explained. "We are heading in the right direction for sure."
