Yann LeCun, former chief AI scientist at Meta, has raised $1 billion to launch a new startup called AMI. The company is developing "world models"—a type of artificial intelligence designed to understand the physical world rather than simply predicting text like current large language models (LLMs).
LeCun has long argued that today's LLMs are limited because they lack a true grasp of reality. World models aim to bridge that gap by enabling AI to reason about cause, effect, and physical interactions. This approach is widely seen as the next frontier in AI research, though it has not yet attracted the same mainstream attention as generative AI tools like ChatGPT.
The funding round is one of the largest ever for an early-stage AI startup, signaling strong investor confidence in LeCun's vision. The startup plans to use the capital to recruit top researchers and accelerate development of world models that could eventually power applications in robotics, autonomous systems, and scientific simulation.
Industry observers note that if successful, AMI could challenge the current dominance of text-based AI and unlock entirely new capabilities. However, skeptics caution that world models remain largely experimental and face significant technical hurdles.
