York City Player Accused of Punching Fan During Promotion Pitch Invasion

Police are investigating a video that appears to show a York City player punching a fan during chaotic scenes after the club's promotion-clinching draw with Rochdale on Saturday.

The National League match ended 1-1, with York securing an automatic return to the Football League after a decade-long absence thanks to a dramatic 13th-minute stoppage-time equaliser by Josh Stones. The goal sparked a pitch invasion, and footage purports to show a fan placing his hands on a York player who was kneeling on the ground with his head down in celebration.

After stewards intervened, the player allegedly stood up, broke free, and punched the fan in the face.

"We are aware of a video that is circulating of a possible assault involving a player," Greater Manchester Police said in a statement. "We have linked in with both clubs and the National League and will be further assessing the video and reviewing CCTV of the incident."

The pitch invasion was the second of the match, following an earlier one when Rochdale took the lead in the 96th minute—a result that would have given them the title and automatic promotion.

Police confirmed that four Rochdale fans were arrested: one on suspicion of assault and pitch incursion, one on suspicion of a public order offence, and two for pitch incursion. One male York City fan was also arrested on suspicion of assault and will be interviewed later.

The Football Association has opened its own investigation. BBC Sport has approached both clubs for comment.

York needed only a draw to secure promotion, and the final-day showdown saw the two teams combined for 212 points during the season.
