Murphy responded with his own century breaks of 59, 90, and 65, but Zhao sealed the night with a dazzling trick shot on the black to draw level.
Meanwhile, Mark Allen also recovered from 5-3 down to tie Barry Hawkins at 8-8. Allen compiled his 700th career century (138) and followed with a 131, while Hawkins answered with a 140—the tournament's joint-highest break. Their match resumes at 10:00 BST on Wednesday.
