Zhao Xintong Battles Past Highfield in Emotional Crucible Opener

China's reigning world snooker champion Zhao Xintong navigated a tense first-round match against England's Liam Highfield, securing a 10-7 victory at the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield.

The match unfolded over two sessions on Saturday, with Zhao holding a narrow 5-4 lead after the first. He then claimed five of the next eight frames to seal his place in the last 16. The defending champion acknowledged the pressure of the occasion, stating, "It was very difficult for me... but it's good for me and this is a big moment in this season. I just tried to control myself but I didn't do it very well and hopefully in the next round I can do a lot better."

Highfield, who has now suffered four first-round exits at the Crucible, praised his opponent's quality while reflecting on the unique challenge of the venue. "He played great in the first half of the second session and that took a bit of wind out of my sails," Highfield said. "You don't play at the Crucible every day... the pressure gets on you and there's a big crowd. It's always great to be here. It is an amazing place to play."

"I'm proud of myself to be here from where I was a year ago when I was trying to get back on the tour. At times I thought he looked edgy and I got him on the ropes, and I let him off and he will punish you because he is that good." — Liam Highfield

The day's play was preceded by a poignant tribute to the late John Virgo, the former player and beloved commentator who passed away in February. A minute's applause echoed through the arena, honoring a figure described by BBC presenter Hazel Irvine as "universally loved by everyone in this sport and beyond - he really was the voice of snooker."

1985 world champion Dennis Taylor, who attended a memorial service for Virgo in Sheffield on Thursday, added, "The cathedral was packed and we gave John a wonderful send-off as he was a very special man. I knew him for more than 50 years and he was a great all-round entertainer. There's a big gap here in the Crucible this year with John not being with us."

Zhao, who made history last year as the first Chinese player to win the World Championship, now awaits the winner of the match between compatriot Ding Junhui and England's David Gilbert. The champion faces the daunting 'Crucible Curse'—no first-time winner at this venue has ever successfully defended their title the following year.

In other first-round action, Northern Ireland's Mark Allen trails China's Zhang Anda 3-5, while three-time champion Mark Williams built a 6-3 lead over Poland's Antoni Kowalski, the first player from his country to compete at the Crucible.
