Brighton & Hove Albion manager Fabian Hurzeler has expressed uncertainty over whether winger Kaoru Mitoma will be fit to represent Japan at the upcoming 2026 World Cup. The 28-year-old suffered a hamstring injury during Brighton's recent victory against Wolverhampton Wanderers and is set to miss the Seagulls' final two Premier League matches of the season.
"Regarding the World Cup, I'm not sure yet," Hurzeler said ahead of Brighton's trip to Leeds United on Sunday. "We'll be in touch with the Japan federation. We really have to be patient with this injury; we cannot give a clear schedule."
Japan head coach Hajime Moriyasu is expected to announce his World Cup squad on Friday, with the tournament beginning on June 11. Japan will open their Group F campaign against the Netherlands on June 14, followed by matches against Tunisia and Sweden.
Mitoma was forced off after 58 minutes in the win over Wolves, and his absence is a significant blow for Brighton as they push for European qualification. The south coast side currently sits seventh in the Premier League standings.
"It is sad for Kaoru. He was in good form and had a big impact on our performances," Hurzeler added.
