Paralympic champion William Ellard has etched his name in swimming history by breaking the S14 100m freestyle world record at the Aquatics GB Swimming Championships in London.

The 20-year-old British swimmer powered to victory in a blistering time of 50.41 seconds, slicing 0.49 seconds off the previous record held by Brazil's Arthur Xavier Ribeiro. This remarkable performance not only secured him the gold medal but also guaranteed his spot at the upcoming European Championships in Paris this summer.

Ellard, who already boasts two gold medals and one silver from the 2024 Paralympic Games, revealed that the world record was always part of his plan. "It was the aim," he stated after the race. "It would be nice to go 49 [seconds] one day but it hurt for the last 15 metres, I just had to put my head down."

While Ellard's achievement dominated the headlines, the championships saw other notable performances. Angharad Evans set a new British record in the 200m breaststroke with a time of 2:19.70, surpassing Molly Renshaw's 2021 mark by 1.19 seconds.

"Tonight was about racing the race, it was a strong field and I knew it was going to be a tough race," Evans commented. "I felt good in there and just had to trust myself. I'm super happy and that was really unexpected."

The event also featured victories from double Olympic champion Matt Richards in the 100m freestyle, Lauren Cox in the 50m backstroke, and Georgia Sheffield in the Para 200m freestyle. A total of 36 British titles will be awarded throughout the week-long meet in London, showcasing the depth of talent in British swimming.
