Buffy Fans Stage 'International Buffy Day' Protest at Hulu Headquarters Demanding Series Resurrection

A dedicated group of 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer' fans took their campaign to revive the canceled reboot directly to Hulu's doorstep this week, staging a protest at the streaming service's Santa Monica offices.

Approximately twenty passionate supporters gathered on Tuesday—coinciding with what they've declared International Buffy Day, which also marks star Sarah Michelle Gellar's birthday—to demand the revival of the shelved project. The protest occurred exactly one month after Disney abruptly pulled the plug on the planned Hulu reboot, leaving both fans and the creative team reeling.

Wearing 'Buffy' merchandise and carrying handmade signs, the group made their message clear: there remains significant audience demand for new Slayer content.

The reboot, tentatively titled 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale,' was first announced in February 2025. The project would have featured Ryan Kiera Armstrong as a new slayer, with Gellar reprising her iconic role in a recurring capacity. Acclaimed director Chloé Zhao was attached to helm the series.

Sources close to the production indicate both Gellar and Zhao were 'blindsided' by the cancellation, particularly given the timing. Gellar had recently enjoyed a successful premiere for her new film at SXSW, while Zhao received eight Oscar nominations for her latest project.

'The team was genuinely excited to continue Buffy's legacy and share their fresh vision with the fanbase,' an insider revealed.

The original television series, which aired from 1997 to 2003, became a cultural phenomenon, blending supernatural drama with coming-of-age themes. Its cancellation after seven seasons left many storylines unresolved, fueling persistent fan demand for continuation or revival over the past two decades.

Tuesday's protest represents the most visible expression of fan discontent since the reboot's cancellation, signaling that the Slayer's devoted followers aren't ready to let this franchise rest in peace.
