Chelsea Football Club has dismissed manager Liam Rosenior after just 106 days in charge, marking the latest upheaval in a turbulent period under the ownership of BlueCo. The move underscores a pattern of instability that has plagued the club since the consortium, led by Behdad Eghbali and Todd Boehly, took over in a £4.25 billion deal in May 2022.
Rosenior, 41, was promoted from within BlueCo's multi-club network, having previously managed Strasbourg. His appointment in January to replace the sacked Enzo Maresca was seen as a gamble—akin to "asking a learner to take his driving test at the wheel of a Ferrari." Despite his promise, Rosenior struggled to navigate the intense pressures at Stamford Bridge, culminating in a public outburst against players after a 3-0 loss to Brighton, which extended Chelsea's winless run to five league matches without a goal—a first since 1912.
"We will undertake a process of self-reflection," Chelsea stated in announcing Rosenior's departure, a sentiment echoed by fans who have protested the club's direction.
The dismissal adds to a growing list of managerial casualties under BlueCo. Since 2022, Chelsea has cycled through six managers, including Champions League winner Thomas Tuchel, Graham Potter, Frank Lampard, Mauricio Pochettino, and Maresca. Former Chelsea winger Pat Nevin commented on the turmoil, noting, "This is four seasons the new ownership has been in. This is manager number six. When you change it that amount of times, you have to ask the question—is the problem really the manager?" He highlighted a "model of responsibility without authority," where managers lack control over key decisions, such as player selection.
Interim manager Calum McFarlane, who previously filled the role between Maresca and Rosenior, will now steer the team through the remainder of the season, including an FA Cup semi-final against Leeds United. The club aims to secure European qualification and, post-season, "bring stability to the head coach position."
However, the search for a permanent manager raises significant challenges.
