Colin Farrell's portrayal of the eccentric private investigator John Sugar takes a more human turn in the second season of Sugar, now streaming on Apple TV+. In an interview, Farrell discussed how the show's second season delves deeper into the character's emotional core, moving beyond the quirky sci-fi revelations that defined the first season.
"In season one, John Sugar was very much a puzzle box—mysterious, alien, and otherworldly," Farrell said. "This season, we see him grappling with real human emotions, connection, and vulnerability. It's been a fascinating journey to strip away the layers and find the man underneath."
The first season of Sugar surprised audiences with a mid-season twist revealing that Sugar was an alien. Season 2, however, focuses on his integration into human society, making him more relatable. Farrell noted that wearing everyday clothing, like jeans, felt oddly disorienting after playing the character in more formal attire.
"I remember standing on set in jeans and a T-shirt, and it was such a strange feeling. John Sugar has always been this polished figure, but now he's learning to be messy and imperfect like the rest of us."
The show's creator praised Farrell's ability to bring depth to the role, saying, "Colin has an incredible range. He can be funny, tragic, and deeply moving often in the same scene."
