A former congressional staffer has publicly accused Representative Eric Swalwell of rape in a CNN interview that aired Friday afternoon. The woman, whose identity was concealed during the broadcast, detailed two alleged incidents of sexual assault by the California congressman.
The woman told CNN she met Swalwell for drinks in 2024 and blacked out after visiting the bathroom during their meeting. She claims to have only fragmented memories of the evening, including attempting to push Swalwell off her while telling him she did not consent to sexual activity.
According to the accuser, this was not the first time Swalwell had assaulted her. She alleges a similar incident occurred in 2019 when she woke up naked in bed with him after a night of heavy drinking, stating she was too impaired to provide consent.
In response to the allegations, Senator Adam Schiff announced he is withdrawing his endorsement of Swalwell's gubernatorial campaign. Schiff stated he is "deeply distressed" by the accusations and believes Swalwell should exit the race.
CNN's report includes additional allegations from three other women who claim Swalwell acted inappropriately toward them, including sending unsolicited explicit messages and nude photographs.
Swalwell has vehemently denied the accusations, calling them "false" and suggesting they are politically motivated ahead of the election. In a statement, he said, "For nearly 20 years, I have served the public – as a prosecutor and a congressman and have always protected women. I will defend myself with the facts and where necessary bring legal action."
The congressman has canceled a scheduled town hall event following the broadcast of the interview.
