Cooking Up Community: Free Plant-Based Classes Serve Joy and Skills in Godalming

A new initiative in Godalming is using the power of food to unite residents, offering free plant-based culinary classes designed to boost kitchen confidence and promote healthy living.

Hosted at the Denningberg Centre on Wednesday mornings, the monthly workshops are spearheaded by the plant-based cookery school Joyfull Greens, in partnership with Waverley Borough Council. The program specifically targets community members who might otherwise face barriers to accessing nutritious meals, including single parents, caregivers, and lower-income households.

The initiative is already proving to be a hit. Last month, attendees gathered to collaboratively prepare a vibrant Gambian peanut stew, a session the local authority praised as a resounding success.

Samantha Hutchison, Waverley Borough Council’s assistant director of community services, highlighted the multifaceted benefits of the community program.

"These classes offer a fantastic opportunity for people to come together, share skills, experience different cultural cuisines and improve both their health and community wellbeing," Hutchison noted.

The core mission of Joyfull Greens is deeply rooted in culinary inclusivity. Founder Frédie Lecerf emphasized that the primary goal is to strip away the financial and educational barriers surrounding sustainable, wholesome diets, ensuring anyone can participate regardless of their budget or prior kitchen experience.

"We are passionate about bringing health, joy and connection to the community through cooking and eating together," Lecerf added.
