Former England captain Courtney Lawes has announced he is officially coming out of international retirement following his signing with Sale Sharks for the 2026-27 season. The 37-year-old lock, who earned 105 caps for England, declared his intention to play for his country again after a three-year hiatus.
"I'm officially un-retiring from international duty and I'd love to play for England again," Lawes stated. "But first and foremost I want to play well for Sale and we'll see what happens after that."
Lawes retired from international rugby after England's semi-final exit in the 2023 Rugby World Cup, ending a 14-year England career that included three Six Nations championships and a World Cup final appearance in 2019. Since then, he played two seasons with French club Brive after leaving Northampton Saints, where he spent 17 years and won two Premiership titles.
The veteran forward explained his decision to return to the Premiership with Sale, citing family connections to the Cheshire area. His move marks a significant coup for the Sharks as they prepare for the upcoming season.
Lawes' international credentials are impressive: he made his England debut in 2009, was part of the 2016 Grand Slam-winning squad, and participated in four World Cups. His final England appearance came in that dramatic 2023 semi-final defeat to South Africa in Paris.
"I want to finish my career playing at the top level," Lawes emphasized, signaling his determination to compete at the highest standard despite his age.
The announcement has sparked speculation about a potential England recall for the experienced campaigner, whose leadership and physical presence could bolster Steve Borthwick's squad ahead of the 2027 World Cup cycle. However, Lawes made clear that his immediate focus remains on performing for his new club before any international considerations.
