The 2026 World Snooker Championship returns to Sheffield's iconic Crucible Theatre from April 18 to May 4, promising seventeen days of intense competition as defending champion Zhao Xintong aims to retain his crown against a field featuring record-breaking talent and legendary contenders.
Zhao, who made history last year by becoming China's first world champion after defeating Mark Williams, will open the tournament against qualifier Liam Highfield. His victory marked a watershed moment for Chinese snooker, and this year's event features an unprecedented eleven Chinese players—surpassing last year's record of ten.
All eyes will also be on Ronnie O'Sullivan, who at age 50 seeks an unprecedented eighth world title to surpass Stephen Hendry's record. O'Sullivan, seeded 12th, begins his campaign against debutant He Guoqiang. A potential path to the final could see him face John Higgins in the second round, Neil Robertson in the quarter-finals, and Zhao in the semi-finals—a rematch of last year's semi-final where Zhao dominated 17-7.
World number one Judd Trump enters as second seed, aiming for his second championship win. Other top contenders include four-time champions Mark Selby and John Higgins, three-time winner Mark Williams, and 2024 champion Kyren Wilson.
The tournament welcomes four debutants, including British teenagers Stan Moody and Liam Pullen. Moody, at 19, becomes the first British teenager to debut at the Crucible since a 17-year-old Trump in 2007. Poland's Antoni Kowalski will also make history as his country's first Crucible competitor.
"The qualifiers will take hope from the success of Zhao last year, who won four qualifying matches to reach the Crucible then went on to become only the third qualifier to win the world title," notes the tournament narrative, highlighting the unpredictable nature of the championship.
This year marks the 50th championship at the Crucible since the tournament moved to Sheffield in 1977. The two-day final begins May 3, with the champion earning £500,000 after winning 71 frames across four matches.
