A devastating explosion at a fireworks factory in Tamil Nadu, India, has resulted in at least 25 fatalities and left four others with serious injuries. The incident occurred on Sunday evening at the Vanaja Fireworks Industry in Virudhunagar, where approximately 50 workers were present despite the facility being officially closed.
Rescue efforts were hampered by a secondary explosion, which injured 13 additional individuals, though none suffered severe burns. District Collector NO Sukhaputra reported that ongoing detonations of firecrackers within the building significantly slowed down the operation, which has since concluded.
An eyewitness, currently receiving medical treatment, described the scene, noting that around 25 people were working in the factory's veranda when the fire erupted. The blaze caused extensive damage, destroying at least three rooms and reducing sections of the structure to rubble.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the blast. Police have filed a complaint against the factory owner and foreman, both of whom are now fugitives. Four special teams have been deployed to locate and apprehend them.
"The factory should not have been operating on a Sunday," stated District Collector Sukhaputra, highlighting this as an initial violation. He confirmed the factory held a valid license but noted that checks for other potential safety breaches are underway.
Identification of the victims remains a grim task, with 22 of the 25 deceased individuals identified so far; most are reported to be women. The force of the explosion was so intense that several bodies were charred beyond recognition.
This tragedy has drawn swift political responses. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep distress and extended condolences to the bereaved families. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin conveyed immense sorrow and has directed officials to provide all necessary assistance to those affected.
