Decades of Anger Signs: Fairfax Accuser's Lawyer Speaks Out After Murder-Suicide

The tragic murder-suicide of former Virginia Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax has reignited scrutiny over sexual assault allegations that once threatened his political career, with one accuser's attorney delivering a pointed statement in the aftermath.

Nancy Erika Smith, who represented Meredith Watson—the woman who accused Fairfax of rape while they were both students at Duke University around 2000—expressed her condolences before issuing a sharp critique.

"First, this is horrific for their children who were home at the time of this event," Smith told the New York Post. "There were decades of signs of his anger and mistreatment of women and he used the court system to intimidate his victims and news outlets. Society must be more responsive when women report these crimes."

Authorities confirm Fairfax shot and killed his wife, Cerina, inside their home early Thursday before taking his own life. The couple had been embroiled in a contentious divorce proceeding at the time.

Watson's allegation surfaced publicly in February 2019, nearly two decades after the alleged assault, creating a political firestorm in Virginia. She claimed the encounter was a premeditated rape and said she had confided in others about it at the time, though she never filed a police report.

Fairfax consistently denied the allegation, maintaining the encounter was consensual. He assembled a high-powered legal team, threatened defamation action against media outlets reporting the claims, and even sued New York Public Radio for defamation in 2022—a case that was ultimately dismissed.

No criminal charges were ever brought against Fairfax in connection with Watson's allegations. The recent tragedy has brought renewed attention to the accusations that once dominated headlines during his time in office.
