Driver’s Licence Revoked by Mistake After Voluntary Surrender Over Spinal Injury

A motorist who voluntarily handed over their driving licence after suffering a spinal injury is speaking out after the DVLA revoked it permanently, a move they say was unnecessary and damaging.

The individual, who wishes to remain anonymous, surrendered their licence out of caution following a spinal injury that temporarily affected their mobility. However, instead of a suspension or medical review, the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) revoked the licence entirely, leaving the driver unable to reapply without extensive retesting.

"I was trying to be responsible by notifying them of my injury, but now I face a bureaucratic nightmare to get back on the road," they said.

The case highlights concerns over the DVLA’s handling of medical disclosures. Campaigners argue that voluntary surrender should not automatically lead to revocation, especially when the condition improves. The DVLA has defended its process, stating that each case is assessed individually, but critics call for clearer guidelines.

For now, the driver must undergo a full medical and practical examination to regain their licence, a process they say is costly and time-consuming.
