Fizz Risk: Premium Pineapple Soda Cans Recalled Over Rupture Fears

A premium fizzy drink brand sold in major UK supermarkets has issued a recall for its pineapple soda cans due to a risk that they may unexpectedly burst apart, posing a potential injury hazard.

The recall, announced by the Food Standards Agency (FSA) on Friday, affects Dalston Soda Company's Pineapple Soda, available in single cans and four-can multipacks at retailers including Waitrose and Asda.

"There is a risk that the cans may unexpectedly break apart and leave sharp edges which may cause injury," the FSA warned.

A company statement attributed the issue to a "packaging defect." Customers who have purchased the affected cans are advised not to consume the drink and to dispose of it safely.

"To safely dispose of the product: handle the cans as little as possible, place them carefully, upright, in a sealed bag and dispose of them with your household waste," the notice advised.

The company urged customers not to return the cans to stores. Instead, anyone who bought the affected products can receive a full refund by contacting Dalston Soda Company directly, even without a receipt.

The recall applies to cans with a best before date of 4 August 2027. Single cans have batch code 037130, while multipacks carry batch code 037129. No other Dalston's products are affected.

Dalston Soda Company was founded by chefs at the now-closed Passing Clouds nightclub in Dalston, east London. Its drinks are stocked in several supermarkets, pub chains, and London attractions.

This incident follows previous recalls of carbonated drinks due to explosion risks. In 2023, presenter Jeremy Clarkson recalled batches of his Hawkstone cider after reports of glass bottles suddenly exploding. In 2024, craft ale company Brew York also recalled its Juice Forsyth IPA cans over similar concerns.
