Fog Forces Two-Hour Delay at US Open, Reshuffling Star Tee Times

The opening round of the US Open at Shinnecock Hills in New York was halted just 30 minutes after it began due to heavy fog. The United States Golf Association (USGA) suspended play at 07:05 local time (12:05 BST), with only 18 players on the course. The delay impacted 2011 champion Rory McIlroy and world number one Scottie Scheffler, who had yet to start their rounds.

Play resumed at 14:05, pushing all subsequent tee times back by two hours. McIlroy, paired with Ryder Cup teammates Tommy Fleetwood and Ludvig Aberg, is now scheduled to tee off at 14:52. Scheffler, aiming to become the seventh player to complete the career Grand Slam with a win this week, will start at 15:14 alongside defending champion JJ Spaun.

England's Aaron Rai, winner of last month's US PGA Championship, is among the later starters and will tee off at 20:14 alongside Collin Morikawa and Jason Day. Matt Fitzpatrick, the 2022 champion, is grouped with two-time winner Bryson DeChambeau and Viktor Hovland at 20:25. Former US Open champions Justin Rose (2013), Jordan Spieth (2016), and Jon Rahm (2021) follow at 21:14.

Scotland's Robert MacIntyre is also in the later wave, beginning at 20:58. The US Open runs from June 18–21 at Shinnecock Hills. Live text updates will be available on the BBC Sport website and app, with live radio commentary for rounds three and four.
