Free Cooking Classes Boost Parents' Confidence in Healthy Meals

Parents in Guernsey who took part in free cooking classes say they now feel more confident preparing healthy, affordable meals for their families. The sessions, run by St Martin's Community centre in partnership with the Health Improvement Commission, were led by a professional chef.

Parent Laura Weller said the class was a safe space to "create new things, and just not be scared of cooking and making healthy choices." She added that she can now make fresh meals her seven-year-old will enjoy.

Alex Kosmas from the Health Improvement Commission acknowledged the challenge of balancing nutrition with busy lives. "With the cost-of-living crisis, we need to help parents as much as we can," he said, noting that making healthy cooking easy can improve food choices.

Chef lecturer Rivelino Rodriguez taught the class to make stir fry, costing just £2 per portion. He said the project gives parents "inspiration for cheap adaptable meals that taste good without additives."

Parent Ros de Carteret noted that working parents have less time to learn everyday cooking, but learning these skills can save money. Rebecca Silk, the centre's operations manager, said the aim is to build "real life skills" and inspire new foods.

The initiative aligns with Guernsey's Healthier Weight Strategy, which aims to combat high rates of excess weight among adults and children.
