Frontier Airlines is set to revolutionize its in-flight experience with the introduction of Starlink Wi-Fi, the high-speed satellite internet service from SpaceX. The ultra-low-cost carrier announced on Tuesday that installations will begin in 2025, with the full rollout expected by 2027.
This move marks a significant upgrade for Frontier, which has traditionally offered a no-frills, egalitarian onboard experience. The airline has been actively enhancing its services, including a revamped loyalty program, a companion pass, and the upcoming introduction of premium seating.
Will Wi-Fi Be Free or Paid?
Frontier has not yet disclosed whether passengers will need to pay for the Starlink Wi-Fi or if it will be complimentary. Budget airlines typically charge for extras, but most carriers adopting Starlink have offered it free. However, Copa Airlines recently announced it would charge most flyers, with exceptions for elite status members and those with Starlink as their home internet provider. Frontier may follow a similar model, potentially offering free access to elite members of its Frontier Miles program.
A Game-Changing Upgrade
Moving from no onboard Wi-Fi to Starlink represents a dramatic shift for Frontier as it aims to capture a larger share of the budget airline market following the collapse of Spirit Airlines. Starlink's satellite technology is also more reliable than traditional Wi-Fi, avoiding recent outages that have affected other carriers.
Industry-Wide Adoption
Frontier joins a growing list of U.S. airlines adopting Starlink. United Airlines and Alaska Airlines are currently installing the service, while American and Southwest have announced plans. Delta and JetBlue are upgrading with Amazon's similar service, but not for a few more years.
1,000 Planes Across Indigo Partners
In addition to Frontier, several other budget airlines backed by private equity firm Indigo Partners will receive Starlink: Wizz Air (Europe), Volaris (Mexico), and JetSmart (South America). A total of 1,000 planes across the portfolio will be equipped, though the installation timeline varies.
First-Class Seats Still on Track
Frontier's first-class seat installation, initially expected last year, is now slated for completion by the end of 2026. The delay is attributed to supply chain issues affecting seat manufacturers.
