Even though United Airlines isn't my go-to carrier, I maintain two of its co-branded credit cards. Here's why the strategy works:
Lounge Access and Priority Perks The United Club Infinite card grants unlimited Club access, which I use on connecting flights or delays. That alone justifies the annual fee.
Baggage and Boarding Benefits The United Explorer card provides free checked bags for me and a companion, plus priority boarding. These perks apply even when flying other Star Alliance partners.
Mileage Pooling Both cards earn United miles, which pool into one account. I use those miles for occasional award flights on partners like Lufthansa or ANA, often better than United's own redemptions.
Sign-up Bonuses and Spending Strategy I rotate which card to put spend on based on bonus categories. The Infinite earns extra on dining, while Explorer earns on United purchases. Welcome bonuses from both cards also boosted my mileage balance.
The key is maximizing the benefits relative to the fees. For frequent travelers, holding multiple airline cards can be a smart way to leverage perks across networks.
