Hollywood's Next Generation: Hudson and Song See Showbiz in Their Children's Future

Actresses Kate Hudson and Brenda Song, currently starring in the Netflix series Running Point, recently shared insights about their children potentially entering the entertainment industry. In an exclusive interview with E! News, alongside series co-creator Mindy Kaling, both stars expressed that a future in show business seems almost inevitable for their kids.

"I don't see a way out of it," Kate Hudson remarked, highlighting the creative DNA that runs in her family. "Our family, I feel like we come out either with doing a scene [or] dancing. I don't know what it is about the DNA in our family."

Hudson, who shares three children—Ryder, 22; Bingham, 14; and Rani, 7—noted that performance seems to be a natural inclination. "Everybody in our family … it's definitely a showbiz thing, or it's just a creative storyteller has to be doing something performance oriented, all of them," she added.

Brenda Song, mother to Dakota, 4, and Carson, 3, with fiancé Macaulay Culkin, echoed similar sentiments. "There's no way," she said regarding her children avoiding the industry. "My kids are only 3 and 5. They're still really young. But the 3-year-old, I'm like, 'Oh no. I can see it!'"

Despite the apparent inevitability, both actresses emphasized the importance of genuine passion for the craft. Hudson, whose mother is Goldie Hawn and stepfather is Kurt Russell, stressed a practical approach. "In our family, love it," she said. "If you don't love it, get out." She described the business as "unpredictable and unstable," noting that only those who truly love it can endure its challenges.

Meanwhile, Mindy Kaling, mother to Katherine, 8; Spencer, 5; and Anne, 2, shared that her children are fascinated by her work but might find the reality less glamorous. "My kids would die to come to set," Kaling said. "They think it's so glamorous, and there's like endless candy—which there is kind of—but then they would sit at video village, and be like, 'I'm bored!'"

The conversation took place as Running Point prepares for its second season, set to premiere on Netflix on April 23. The series follows Kate Hudson's character, Isla Gordon, as she navigates leadership of the Los Angeles Waves basketball team while balancing personal and family dynamics.
