Gary Neville's acquisition of United influencer Mark Goldbridge's YouTube channels through 'The Overlap' network highlights the growing influence of the former Manchester United defender in football media. Co-chair Neville stated, "We are building what we believe will become one of the most exciting independent football communities in the world - one that gives fans direct, personality-led content."
Neville co-founded Buzz16 a decade ago and launched The Overlap in 2021. Featuring the discussion show 'Stick to Football', it has amassed 2.2 billion views across platforms in 2025. Buzz16 expanded into cricket, rugby, and even secured live Bundesliga rights. A majority stake was recently sold to Global, and Goldbridge's channels, with 3.7 million subscribers, were acquired.
Buzz16 generated £11.6m in revenue last year, but Goalhanger, co-founded by Gary Lineker in 2014, earned £14m from a Netflix deal. Goalhanger's podcasts, including 'The Rest Is Football', see over 75 million monthly downloads and reported profits of over £3m in late 2024. The company partnered with DAZN and La Liga, and secured private equity investment.
While Goalhanger dominates podcast charts, The Overlap leads on YouTube with 1.66m subscribers. Scott Melvin, co-founder of The Overlap, says, "They've done unbelievably well. They're market leaders in podcast space, whereas we're a 'video-first' business." Tony Pastor, Goalhanger's co-founder, agrees they are different: "Our biggest show is The Rest Is Politics. We don't really compete."
Their success poses challenges to mainstream broadcasters. Jimmy Worrall, who launched The Football Boardroom podcast, notes, "They are niche, small businesses with huge influence but modest turnover. They are taking eyeballs and tapping into shifting fan consumption patterns." Roger Mosey, former BBC executive, adds that broadcasters are bound by impartiality, while podcasts can be more passionate.
Lineker's 30-year BBC relationship ended after a social media post on Zionism, while Neville continues at Sky. Melvin insists Goldbridge will retain his style: "There's no point investing in Mark and turning him into a traditional presenter." The Overlap also needed a daily offering, as Melvin recalls, "When Ruben Amorim was sacked, we had no show for 10 days. We need to be agile."
Both Lineker and Neville exemplify a trend of football personalities launching direct-to-fan media channels, retaining content control.
