Prime Minister Takaichi has declared that the upcoming revision of Japan's three key security documents is "an important undertaking that will determine the fate of the nation." The statement came during the first meeting of a government-appointed expert panel tasked with updating the National Security Strategy and related policies by the end of the year.
Speaking to the panel, Takaichi stressed that the security environment has changed dramatically, necessitating a fundamental shift in Japan's defense posture. The revisions are expected to address new threats, including cyber warfare and regional military buildups, while strengthening the U.S.-Japan alliance.
The expert panel, comprising security analysts, former diplomats, and military strategists, will deliberate on the scope of changes. The government aims to finalize the revised documents by December 2026, marking the first major security policy overhaul in over a decade.
