Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has reshuffled his Cabinet three times since taking office in July 2024, following a series of resignations and political challenges.
Health Secretary Wes Streeting resigned as part of a leadership bid after poor election results in May, while Defence Secretary John Healey stepped down in June amid a dispute over defence spending. The first reshuffle occurred in September 2025 after Deputy Prime Minister and Housing Secretary Angela Rayner resigned over underpaid stamp duty, which she later settled with HMRC without penalty.
Below are the key members of Starmer's cabinet and ministers who attend cabinet meetings.
Keir Starmer — Prime Minister
Sir Keir Starmer became the first Labour leader to defeat a sitting Conservative government since Tony Blair in 1997, winning the 2024 general election. He highlights achievements like reducing NHS waiting lists and attracting investment, but faced U-turns on welfare reform and winter fuel payments. On the world stage, he has balanced relations with US President Donald Trump and support for Ukraine, though critics label him "Never here Keir" for his focus on global threats. Starmer trained as a barrister, served as Director of Public Prosecutions (2008-2013), and is MP for Holborn and St Pancras.
David Lammy — Deputy Prime Minister, Lord Chancellor, and Justice Secretary
Lammy assumed the deputy PM role after Angela Rayner's resignation. He previously served as Foreign Secretary, and his ties with US Vice President JD Vance have been crucial for US-UK relations. Born to Guyanese parents in north London, he was the first Black Briton to earn a Master of Laws at Harvard. Elected as the youngest MP at 27 in 2000, he calls his appointment "the honour of my life."
Rachel Reeves — Chancellor of the Exchequer
Reeves is the first woman to hold this role. She faces pressure to maintain spending limits without raising income tax, national insurance, or VAT. After being seen in tears over abandoned welfare cuts in 2025, Starmer affirmed she would remain chancellor "for many years." A former economist, she represents Leeds West and Pudsey.
Darren Jones — Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster
Jones took on this role after becoming Chief Secretary to the Prime Minister. He oversees the Cabinet Office, coordinating government policy. Previously Chief Secretary to the Treasury under Reeves, he is MP for Bristol North West and claims to be the first "Darren" in parliament.
Yvette Cooper — Foreign Secretary
Cooper replaced David Lammy in the reshuffle. Formerly Home Secretary, she calls the role a "huge honour," emphasizing UK diplomacy's importance amid Russia's actions and the Gaza crisis. First elected in 1997, she was the first female Chief Secretary to the Treasury and one half of the first married cabinet couple with Ed Balls.
Shabana Mahmood — Home Secretary
Mahmood succeeded Yvette Cooper as Home Secretary. She previously served as Shadow Justice Secretary and has been MP for Birmingham Ladywood since 2010.
This cabinet reflects Starmer's efforts to stabilize his government amid internal and external challenges.
