Keldon Johnson Claims NBA Sixth Man of the Year Honors for Spurs

San Antonio Spurs guard-forward Keldon Johnson has been named the NBA's Sixth Man of the Year for the 2023-24 season, the league announced Tuesday.

Johnson, a key spark plug off the bench, averaged 15.8 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 3.1 assists per game while shooting 45.7% from the field. His energy and scoring punch provided a consistent lift for the Spurs throughout the campaign.

"It's an honor to receive this award," Johnson said in a statement. "My focus has always been on doing whatever it takes to help our team win. Coming off the bench is a role I've embraced, and I'm grateful for the trust from my coaches and teammates."

The 24-year-old out of Kentucky beat out a competitive field for the award, which recognizes the league's top reserve player. His selection marks a significant individual achievement for a Spurs team focused on developing its young core.

Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich praised Johnson's professionalism and impact. "Keldon's approach every single day is exemplary," Popovich said. "He accepts his role with a team-first mentality and brings a contagious intensity. This award is a testament to his hard work and dedication."

Johnson is the first Spurs player to win the Sixth Man award since Manu Ginóbili in 2008, continuing a franchise tradition of valuing bench production. With this recognition, Johnson solidifies his status as one of the NBA's premier reserves and a cornerstone for San Antonio's future.
