Lil Nas X, the Grammy-winning rapper, has been granted a conditional reprieve from serious criminal charges that could have resulted in a five-year prison sentence. A judge has ruled that if the artist, whose legal name is Montero Lamar Hill, successfully completes a court-mandated mental health treatment program and adheres to specific behavioral conditions for two years, all charges against him will be dropped.
"A judge has now said that if he sticks with the treatment, obeys the law, and does not possess any weapons or threaten violence for two years, the three charges of police battery and a resisting arrest charge will be dropped."
The charges stem from an incident in August 2025 in Studio City, Los Angeles, where police responded to reports of an individual walking in the street in his underwear. According to authorities, when officers attempted to intervene, Hill allegedly charged at them. He was subsequently arrested and pleaded not guilty to all charges, including battery of a police officer and resisting arrest. His bail was set at $75,000.
Following his arrest, Hill was diagnosed with bipolar disorder and voluntarily entered a mental health treatment program for two months, as reported by Rolling Stone. The court's recent decision formalizes this path toward rehabilitation, linking the dismissal of the felony charges directly to his continued engagement with treatment and good conduct.
In the aftermath of the arrest, Hill communicated with his fans, describing the experience as "fucking terrifying" but assuring them he was physically and mentally okay, though shaken. His father, Robert Stafford, later commented that the intense pressures of the music industry, combined with family responsibilities and his mother's reported struggles with addiction, contributed to what he called his son's "breakdown."
