Thousands of demonstrators took to the streets of central London on Saturday to commemorate the 78th anniversary of the Nakba, or "catastrophe," which refers to the displacement and dispossession of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians during the 1948 Arab-Israeli war.
The march, organized by Palestine solidarity groups, wound through major thoroughfares as participants waved Palestinian flags and chanted for justice and the right of return. Organizers estimated the crowd in the tens of thousands, though official police figures were not immediately available.
Speakers at the rally called for an end to the ongoing conflict in Gaza and for recognition of Palestinian rights under international law. The event proceeded largely peacefully, with a heavy police presence monitoring the route.
