Nearly 20 million people in conflict-ridden Sudan are now suffering from acute food insecurity, according to the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC). The Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) has warned that a combination of restricted access to food and collapsing health services will lead to widespread deaths.
"The situation is catastrophic. Many will die not just from starvation, but from preventable diseases due to the decimation of health facilities," said an NRC spokesperson.
The IPC report highlights that the number of people facing crisis-level hunger or worse has more than doubled since last year. The ongoing war between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has devastated agriculture, disrupted markets, and forced millions to flee their homes.
Humanitarian organizations are struggling to deliver aid due to violence, bureaucratic obstacles, and a lack of funding. The UN has warned that without immediate action, the crisis could become one of the worst famines in decades.
