Rising Heat Could Disrupt a Quarter of Future World Cup Matches, Scientists Warn FIFA

Scientists have cautioned FIFA that global warming poses a significant threat to the integrity of future World Cup tournaments, with as many as one in four matches potentially impacted by extreme heat. The warning comes as a new study reveals that climate change has exacerbated hot conditions since the last men's World Cup held in the United States in 1994.

Researchers analyzed historic weather data and future climate models, finding that venues in North America, Europe, and Asia face increased risk of 'gruelling heat' during typical tournament months. The findings highlight the growing challenge for football's governing body to schedule matches and protect player health as temperatures rise.

"The risks are clear and present. Without adaptation, the beautiful game could be compromised by extreme weather events," said a lead author of the study.

FIFA has yet to issue a formal response, but the organization has previously acknowledged the need to consider climate impacts in its planning processes. The study urges football authorities to implement heat management strategies, including adjusted kick-off times and mandatory cooling breaks, to safeguard players and spectators alike.
