O'Sullivan Targets Historic Eighth Title Against Chinese Debutant in World Snooker Championship Opener

Ronnie O'Sullivan will launch his quest for an unprecedented eighth World Snooker Championship title against Chinese newcomer He Guoqiang in a highly anticipated first-round clash at Sheffield's Crucible Theatre.

O'Sullivan, the legendary 50-year-old who shares the modern-era record of seven world titles with Stephen Hendry, will begin his campaign on Tuesday, concluding the match on Wednesday. His opponent, world number 47 He Guoqiang, secured his maiden Crucible appearance by defeating England's Jack Lisowski in qualifying.

"There are some brilliant matches and Ali Carter and John Higgins will be another really great game - there are a lot of really good ones," said 2010 champion Neil Robertson, highlighting the tournament's competitive depth.

The 2026 championship draw, announced on BBC Radio 5 Live Breakfast, features several compelling matchups. World number one Judd Trump will face Gary Wilson, while Masters champion Kyren Wilson takes on 19-year-old debutant Stan Moody. Four-time champions John Higgins and Mark Selby face tough challenges against Ali Carter and 2024 runner-up Jak Jones respectively.

China's growing snooker presence reaches new heights with a record 11 players in the 32-strong field, surpassing last year's previous high of 10. This includes two all-Chinese first-round ties: Xiao Guodong versus Zhou Yuelong and Wu Yize against Lei Peifan. Zhao Xintong, who became China's first world champion by winning the 2025 title, opens the tournament on Saturday against England's Liam Highfield.

Other notable matches include former champion Shaun Murphy against Fan Zhengyi, Ding Junhui versus David Gilbert, and Mark Allen taking on Zhang Anda. The 17-day tournament begins Saturday, with the final scheduled for May 3-4, all broadcast live on the BBC.

With O'Sullivan potentially making history, debutants like He Guoqiang seeking to make their mark, and China's strongest-ever contingent, the 2026 World Championship promises compelling drama at the iconic Crucible venue that has hosted the event since 1977.
